Cathy Egelston Studios - About the Artist
I grew up loving to draw, paint, make things with my hands, and explore. I still do. I enjoy sharing the fun of creative expression with others through teaching art classes.
In college I studied art, specializing in painting, and received a Bachelors Degree from California State University Northridge, near Los Angeles. I also received a Certificate in Early Childhood Education from Sonoma State University, CA.
The people in my life, various places I have lived, literature, dreams and imagination have all inspired the subject matter of my artwork.
Living in Los Angeles, I had experience in a variety of fields of art. I worked for Hang Gliding Magazine in the advertising department where my job included graphic design and illustration. I also freelanced as a muralist, painter, watercolor and airbrush illustrator (everything from surfboards to film festival and music posters) and belonged to an artist's cooperative called Workshop IE in Santa Monica, CA where I did printmaking.
In Point Reyes, California, I continued to paint, exhibited art in solo and group shows, and began teaching art. I illustrated a mammal book for Point Reyes National Seashore, where I also worked as a volunteer ranger/naturalist.
I lived in Southern Oregon where I taught art classes for 28 years at various locations, including the Rogue Gallery in Medford (classes for adults and summer camps for children), Ashland School District WIllow Wind Community Learning Center (classes for homeschoolers), the Blue Heron Gallery, Ashland, Southern Oregon University Summer Arts camp, and Jackson County library children's programs.
Since 2005, I have taught watercolor, drawing and acrylic painting classes for adults for the City of Ashland Parks Department year round with summer classes outdoors in Lithia Park and Spring/Fall classes at North Mountain Nature Center. In 2020, I began teaching my indoor classes online. In 2024, my husband and I relocated to the Netherlands to be with family. I have continued to teach classes online that began in Oregon.
I have done freelance work as an illustrator, muralist and portrait artist, and also been a member of and exhibited at the Rogue Gallery, Medford, Blue Heron Gallery, and Art and Soul Gallery in Ashland and other venues.
