To The Student:
Painting and Drawing are skills
that take time and patience.
Be patient and gentle with yourself. What people often refer to as "mistakes" are simply steps in the process of learning something new.
I suggest keeping your work so you can see your progress.
As a result of drawing and painting, you will begin to notice things and colors around you in your daily life you may never have noticed before.
Your art will go beyond working in class, or practice at home. It will become a new way of seeing.
Watercolor, Drawing and Acrylic Painting
I taught classes in Southern Oregon for 28 years at various locations.
Since 2005, I have taught Beginning and Intermediate Drawing, Watercolor and Acrylic classes for adults for the City of Ashland Parks Department.
I have also taught a Studio class for students working on individual projects.
Classes have been indoors at the Grove Community Center, and outdoors at North Mountain Park Nature Center and Lithia Park.
(In 2020, I moved online for the indoor classes.) In 2024, I relocated to Utrecht in the Netherlands where I continue to teach classes online.
Beginning classes focus on the basics of drawing and painting, the use of tools and materials, understanding color and the elements of art in order to create a solid foundation for the students.
The more advanced classes build upon the information and skills learned in the beginning classes and also give the students the opportunity and encouragement to develop their own style and direction.
Quotes from Students:
"Cathy takes you from where you are and gives excellent and direct advice on how to proceed and how to see and paint and draw." Susan A.
"The beginning classes have sequential/step-by-step instruction and a slow pace to learn the basics and build on them. They help give me guidance to express myself artistically." Bennie W.
"I both commend and recommend Cathy Egelston for her abilities as a teacher of the techniques of watercolor painting. Her methodology is rational and progresses in appropriate learning steps. Her attitude is one of easy encouragement regardless of the capabilities of the student." Richard H.
"Cathy's guidance in looking at subjects has helped me with drawing. She is extremely patient and non-judgmental in helping students make progress." Barbara M.
"Cathy has a kind, gentle, non-judgmental style and is an excellent teacher." Tom O.
"I had never taken art classes in the past and was apprehensive about what type of experience I would encounter. I immediately found the classes taught by Cathy to be a positive experience. Cathy is an excellent teacher who is patient and genuinely supportive of her students." Doris D.
"Even after a life-long career as a biologist, I am astounded at the visual discoveries of nature that I continue to make in Ms. Egelston's art classes! I have taken both indoor studio and plein air drawing and watercolor classes and have had extraordinary positive learning experiences in both class settings." Marta M.
